Car Glossary

Active Safety – Features that make driving safer and that prevent accidents from happening (anti-lock braking system, four wheel drive, parking distance sensors).

Antique Car – it tends to refer to a vehicle that was built prior to 1915.

ATV – it stands for an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). This type of vehicle is meant for use on off-highway trails. The parameters of these vehicles are as follows – less than 70 inches wide and weigh less than 1,000 pounds.

Biodiesel – a processed fuel derived from biological sources such as vegetable oil, which can be readily used in diesel-engined vehicles. As it is made from a renewable source, it is more environmentally friendly than normal diesel.

Cabriolet/convertible – this is a car with a folding roof, which is based on an existing hard-top model. A good example of such a car is the VW Beetle Cabriolet. This vehicle usually provides four seats and is more practical than a roadster.

Car Dealership – it stands for a company that that sells new and/or used cars at retail prices, based on a dealership contract with a car manufacturer or its sales branch. Car salespeople are responsible for selling the cars.

Car Insurance – insurance purchased for any types of vehicles. Its primary objective is to protect against losses occurred as a result of traffic accidents and against liability that could be incurred in an accident.

Car Safety – the field of scrupulous study and practice of car design, its construction, and equipment in order to minimize the involved risks and consequences of automobile safety.

Compact Car – A classification of cars which are larger than a supermini but smaller than or equal to a mid-size car.

First Registration Fee – A one-off administrative charge that is levied whenever a new car is registered.

Hybrid Car – a car powered by two or more different types of energy. Currently, the most common type of a hybrid vehicle is the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV).

Luxury Car – a well-designed, well-constructed, well-equipped and well-appointed vehicle, varying in size from a compact to a large saloon.

Model Line – represent cars with the same platform or model name.

Number Plate – A set of plates attached to the front and rear of a vehicle for official identification purposes.

NVH – Acronym for Noise, Vibration and Harshness. This term refers to any kind of disturbance that can affect the ride and quiet of a vehicle in the negative way.

Passive Safety – features that protect the occupants of a car and pedestrians in the event of a crash (airbags, bumpers, collapsible steering column, crumple zones, seatbelt pre-tensioners).

Seatbelt Pretensioners – A safety device that pre-emptively tightens the seatbelt during a frontal impact to prevent the passenger from jerking forward. The system then gradually releases the belt tension to lessen the impact forces transferred to the occupant.

Sports Car – a very fast vehicle constructed for performance driving. More often it is rear-wheel drive, the car has two seats and two doors, accelerates briskly, brakes sharply, steers precisely and maneuvers well.

Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) – this is a kind of vehicle similar to a station wagon, but built on a light-truck chassis. Usually goes with four-wheel drive for both the on- or off-road driving and it offers some possibility to be used as an off-road vehicle.

Truck – this a vehicle with the primary objective to transport cargo. Trucks come in different size, power and configuration. Commercial trucks can be of a very large size and be extremely powerful, and may be configured to mount specialized equipment, such as in the case of fire trucks and concrete mixers and suction excavators. Modern trucks can be equipped with either gasoline or diesel engine, with the latter being frequent in commercial applications.
